Ben Franklin Once Again Named No. 1 School in Louisiana
NEW ORLEANS (Nov. 6, 2019) – Benjamin Franklin High School is proud to announce that it has once again been ranked as the top school in the state based on its School Performance Score, or SPS.
Franklin’s annual report card from the Louisiana Department of Education showed consistent A performance in the 2018-2019 school year. Since the state began issuing school-level grades, Franklin has always earned an A.
The total SPS is 135.5, and grades for the key indices include high school assessment, high school progress, ACT scores, strength of diploma, and graduation rate; Franklin received an A in each of these categories.
The scores for each subgroup – Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, White, and Economically Disadvantaged – also were A’s and in the 99th percentile. Additionally, Franklin was recognized by the state as a Top Gains Honoree for the progress made by students on state testing and an Equity Honoree for the progress made by students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
This SPS is the highest in the state. Multiple national reports continue to rank Franklin in the top 100 high schools in the country, and more important, Franklin graduates continue to gain admission, with generous scholarships, to public and private universities throughout the U.S. and abroad. While welcoming students from more than 80 middle schools each year and from every ZIP code in the city, the well-taught Advanced Placement, gifted, and honors curricula; opportunities for research and critical thinking; and experiences through the arts, sports, and extracurricular programs help to fulfill the school’s mission: “to prepare students of high academic achievement to be successful in life.”
“Although we are pleased with our top rank, it really isn’t about bragging rights,” said Academics Assistant Principal David Ferris. “We were happy to see that our score went up this year, as did scores across the state, because that kind of continual improvement is our true end goal. We owe this score to our incredible teachers and of course the strong and well-prepared students we receive from our great feeder schools across the city.”
Head of School Dr. Patrick Widhalm added: “The School Performance Scores give our school internal guideposts to focus on serving the needs of students, and we are gratified to see that we are helping our students succeed and thrive.”
