New Hynes Charter School-UNO opens with Kindergarten
(November 15, 2018, New Orleans, La.)- Hynes Charter School, in partnership with the University of New Orleans (UNO), announced today that they will open a new school for the 2019-20 school year. The name of the school will be Hynes Charter School-UNO.
Hynes Charter School-UNO will initially open with approximately 75 Kindergarten students and eventually grow to a full Kindergarten-8thgrade charter school focused on a well-rounded, core curriculum with a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) focus. The school will also offer a French Immersion program. Hynes Charter School-UNO will replicate the current Hynes curriculum, core values, and framework.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer a Hynes education to more families. Last year, nearly 1,000 students applied to Hynes for 75 available Kindergarten seats,” said Hynes CEO Michelle Douglas. “This partnership between the University of New Orleans and the Hynes Charter School team will allow us to expand the number of students we serve and the number of leaders and teachers we train.”
The campus will be temporarily housed at the Jean Gordon swing space, located at 6101 Chatham Dr., until the new school is constructed on the UNO campus. For the 2019-20 school year, Hynes Charter School-UNO will be an option in Enroll NOLA for potential students for the traditional or French program.
Hynes is the highest demand, non-selective admissions elementary school in Orleans Parish. Hynes is a consistently high-performing, open admissions, A-rated school. Last week the Louisiana Department of Education recognized Hynes as a “Top Gains” School and it was named to the state’s “Excellence Honor Roll” for early childhood education. Hynes remains accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
“We are excited to move forward with the Hynes Charter School-UNO Campus,” said UNO President John Nicklow. “The University believes strongly in its role as a community asset and making high-quality tuition-free education available to more families in our city is well aligned with our institutional values. We look forward to identifying a permanent site for the replicated school.”
“We are very thankful to see this partnership come to fruition as a way to expand our high-performing schools to other families in the city,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. “Not only will this partnership help us achieve our goal of increasing the number of students attending “A” and “B” schools, but it will also give our students an incentive to strive in higher education. Thank you to UNO President John Nicklow for your continuous support in our school system and always finding ways to invest in our children.”
