Renowned LSU Basketball Coach Dale Brown to Speak at Ben Franklin High

Date: August 31st, 2018

NEW ORLEANS (Aug. 17, 2018) – Dale Brown, the winningest LSU basketball coach in program history, will give a speech to Benjamin Franklin High School students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. in the Ben Franklin auditorium, located at 2001 Leon C. Simon Drive.

Brown, a member of the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame, coached LSU’s basketball program for 25 years, from 1972 to 1997, leading his team to two Final Fours and four Elite Eights. In addition to being the winningest coach in LSU basketball history, he is the second-winningest coach in SEC history and is celebrated as the man who recruited basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal. After retiring from coaching, he embarked on a second career as an author and a motivational speaker.

“He transcends sports,” said Brian Allee-Walsh, the assistant baseball coach at Ben Franklin and a former Franklin parent. “He’s a fighter for the common person, not just student-athletes. I can think of no better speaker: He can relate to all people, all age groups, all demographics.”

Long known as a standout school for academics, Ben Franklin also has fielded numerous state championship athletic teams, and the school is frequently a contender for the Ford Cup, an award given to the best athletic program in the state of Louisiana. Ben Franklin has 20 competitive sports teams, including soccer, football, cross-country, golf, volleyball, tennis, swimming, basketball, softball, baseball, and indoor/outdoor track and field.

“I think Dale Brown will motivate our entire student body,” Allee-Walsh said. “We know that our students are exceptional; Dale Brown will help them translate that motivation and determination that they have in the classroom to the athletics fields, as well.”

Franklin’s Athletic Director Chrissa Hailey is herself a longtime admirer of Brown: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear a Hall of Fame coach speak! I’m in total awe that he will be here on Aug. 25.”

The event is free and open to the public.
