Two Lusher Seniors Named Candidates for United States Presidential Scholars Program

Lusher Seniors Julia Simon and Henry Wietfeldt have been selected  as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program.  The awards will be announced in May.

“We are so proud of Julia and Henry for being selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation’s most prestigious academic awards,” said Lusher CEO Kathy Riedlinger.   “This is an enormous accomplishment and honor for these students.”
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
Julia Simon’s activities include:  Science Olympiad Team; Editor-in-chief for The Post-Diluvian; President, Spanish Club; Junior Class President; State Science Fair Award; Kelly Gibson Junior Golf Foundation Scholarship Recipient; New Orleans Public School Board’s Advisory Council; Work with Van Bael Lab at Tulane, studying wetlands; National Honor Society; Poetry Out Loud; STEM area of concentration; Ace-level participant of the First Tee, played golf with Vijay Singh (her favorite golfer) at Pebble Beach; 13 AP Classes
Henry Wietfeldt’s activities include:  Varsity Tennis Team; Chess Team; Science Olympiad Team; President, Students for Environmental Action Club; Young Democrats Club; Tulane Courses: General Physics II, Modern Physics I; Concentration: Math/Science; Honors: National Merit Semi-finalist, 1st in LA State Rally, Spanish III; 11 AP Classes
