Hynes-Lakeview Student Alvin Su Named 2024 State Finalist for Louisiana Department of Education Student of the Year in Middle/Jr. High

NEW ORLEANS – March 7, 2024 – Hynes Charter School – Lakeview is pleased to announce that eighth-grade student Alvin Su has been named a state finalist for the 2024 Louisiana Students of the Year competition by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE).

The LDOE revealed its 24 finalists for the prestigious competition yesterday, recognizing outstanding students from across the state. Alvin Su was honored as the Grade 8 finalist for Region 1, standing out among his peers and representing the exceptional talent nurtured within the Hynes Charter Schools network. He is one of eight 8th grade finalists and one of two finalists from Orleans Parish.

Dr. Michelle Douglas, CEO of Hynes Charter Schools, expressed immense pride in Alvin’s achievements, stating, “We are so incredibly proud of Alvin and his many accomplishments. He is an amazing young man with a bright future, a leader in and out of the classroom who sincerely deserves this honor. Congratulations to Alvin, his parents, and his incredible teachers!”

Alvin Su (photo below) is not only an accomplished musician, having played the violin since the age of six, but also excels in academics, particularly in the field of mathematics. His passion for education and reading aligns with his dream of pursuing a career in law. As the president of the National Junior Honor Society at Hynes-Lakeview, Alvin demonstrated exceptional leadership. Under his tenure, he organized and led multiple fundraising events, represented the school at the City Council meeting for the 70th anniversary of Hynes, and served on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.

Students are selected based on criteria that measure academic achievement, leadership skills, character, and service to their schools and communities. Regional selection committees also use electronic portfolios of accomplishments, along with student writing samples and interviews to assess the communications and critical thinking skills of each candidate.

The finalists will gather on April 10 at the River Center Branch Library in Baton Rouge for an awards ceremony. During this event, the Louisiana Students of the Year winners from each grade will be announced, recognizing their outstanding achievements and contributions.
