Last night at Lafreniere Park, the Morris Jeff Community School varsity boys soccer team, ranked #22, upset St. Michael’s (#6) in the regional round of the LHSAA Division III state tournament. The match was tied at full time and the teams battled through two 10-minute overtime periods, and two five-minute “golden goal” periods (when a goal is scored, the game ends and the winner is determined.) In the final play of the 2nd golden goal period, the Pelicans earned a corner kick and it became the winning goal, a header from sophomore Kris Avila.
Morris Jeff (#22) will face University Lab (#3) in the quarterfinals this weekend in a match in Baton Rouge. University Lab will have home field advantage.
This is Morris Jeff’s 6th year in LHSAA and its 2nd appearance in the state tournament quarterfinals. MJCS was previously in Division 4, and due to increased enrollment were moved up to Division 3 in the 2022-23 school year.
