National Hispanic Heritage Month at Emeril Lagasse Teaching Kitchen
Chef of family restaurant Mawi Tortillerias will teach students how to make tortillas WHAT: In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. John Ochsner Discovery Health Sciences Academy (DJOD) will host Chef Will Avelar of family restaurant Mawi Tortillerias. Avelar is a former longtime employee of Chef Emeril Lagasse, and a DJOD parent. Chef Will Avelar will be teaching students a lesson on making tortillas at the Emeril Lagasse Teaching Kitchen at Dr. John Ochsner Discovery Health Sciences Academy. WHEN: Wednesday, October 4th 2:45-3:15 PM (Chef will be available at 2:25pm, students arrive at 2:45pm)WHERE: Dr. John Ochsner Discovery Health Sciences Academy – The Emeril Lagasse Teaching Kitchen classroom 1108 Shrewsbury Road, Jefferson, LA 70121WHY: The Emeril Lagasse Teaching Kitchen integrates gardening and cooking concepts into school curriculums, creating an interactive, food-centered learning environment. Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen relies on four key pillars to guide implementation: appreciation for the source of food, understanding of nutrition and healthy eating, the development of life skills through food, and the development of culinary skills. Chef Jason Madden is the teacher of the class.
