Sci High Celebrates Black History Month

New Orleans Charter Science and Math, “Sci High”, Celebrates Black History Month with Theme: The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity
 
New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School “Sci High” will honor Black History Month for the month of February with a series of planned activities.  Sci-High joins the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in recognizing and acknowledging the contributions of the Black Diaspora with the theme The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.
 
Among activities planned for the month are:
A Bit of History: Students will receive two emails per week that will showcase an important person, place, or event. The email will include a mini-documentary and a Google quiz. If a student completes the survey correctly, their name is put in a drawing for a gift card.
Essay Writing Contest: Students are invited to write an essay about “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity” with cash prices for the winners.
Black History Program: Sci High is partnering with the New Orleans Public Library to screen their Black History Program.
 
The month will culminate with Black History Spirit Week. The Sci High community will celebrate Black History with the following activities:
February 22:  Dashiki Day:  Participants will wear African Prints or dashiki.
February 23: Historically Black College or University Day: Participants will represent their favorite Historically Black College or University.
February 24:  Black Greek Organization Day:  Participants will pay respect to the legacy of Black Greek Organizations by representing their COLORS.
February 25: Liberation Day:  Participants will represent the Black Nationalist Flag by wearing their class color (green, black, yellow or red)
February 26: The Hair Affair: Participants will show off their hair and are encouraged to wrap, braid, color it!

Sci High offers students cutting-edge and industry-focused STEM electives and recently moved to a new, $35 million state-of-the-art campus in the biomedical corridor in Mid-City.  Students have access to Advanced Placement(AP) classes, paid summer internships, and robotics courses. Sci High is theonly public school in New Orleans to offer all three industry pathways ofthe Project Lead the Way courses: Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Computer Science and boasts a new Makerspace for student exploration.Sci High features small class sizes in an encouraging, respectful atmosphere in an academically rigorous public school setting. Sci High dedicates many resources to supporting the whole child, through counseling support, a health clinic, tutoring and enrichment programs, and student-centered initiatives and training
