Young Audiences Charter School (YACS) and Young Audiences of Louisiana to Distribute Art Projects to 1,150 YACS Students

WHAT:        Young Audiences Charter School and its parent organization, Young Audiences of Louisiana, have created age-appropriate art projects for YACS students to continue growing creatively while school is closed.  The kits will contain all necessary supplies for students to complete a fun, educational art project from start to finish. The bags will be available to all 1,150 YACS students in grades K-9.  Young Audiences Charter School is the only arts-integrated charter school in Jefferson Parish.

WHERE:        YACS families may pick up the bags at Young Audiences Charter School, 1407 Virgil St. in Gretna from 9:00AM-10:30AM            or meet at their hub bus stop where staff will deliver them.

NEWS MEDIA: *Please contact Jessica at jmckeown@yacharterschool.org or (504) 300-5038 if you would like to cover.*

WHEN:        Wednesday, May 6,  9:00AM-10:30AM

WHY:            YACS wants to continue bringing high quality arts learning with foundations in core academic content while students are home. It is important that every student has access to the high quality arts materials that they would usually be doing at school.  The student art kits will vary – they may contain character puppets of a student’s favorite book or made up characters for their own story. Others may include Pop Art Inspired Self Portraits of various emotions that encourage students to explore how facial expressions show a range of emotions.
At Young Audiences Charter School, the arts-integration curriculum reflects recent research from the arts education field that provides significant evidence of the value of the arts in the learning process.  Arts Integration combines the arts with the learning of core academic subjects. It supports educational achievement and improved student behavior by giving children both a “springboard” and a “safety net” for learning. The arts allow students to be more engaged in education-focusing on each child’s abilities and interests to provide support in academic achievement. The arts also provide increased opportunities for parental involvement in school, a key component to education.

This event is for media coverage consideration only and is not open to the public.

Enrollment is open to any Jefferson Parish student. Recent research shows that students at schools with an arts-integrated curriculum scored higher on standardized tests and academic measures than those at other types of schools, including academic magnet schools. (PAIR, 2013) Additionally, students involved in the arts have better attendance, fewer behavior referrals, increased class participation, and are more likely to report a love of learning.
